If you decide to help the animal, you can post a notification to your friends' status feeds and your Facebook main page to let your friends know they can adopt the animal. Your friends can then click the link and adopt the animal.
Here is where the confusion comes in: you can not adopt your own animal, you can only adopt animals that friends put up on Facebook. The easiest way to get lost animals is to have a lot of friends that play FarmVille and regularly check your status feed. Animals do not seem to expire, there just seems to be a random limit to how many people can adopt them (multiple people can adopt the same animal). As a result, you can even adopt animals that were posted a few days prior if no one had claimed them, so make sure if you are looking for some you take a good look through your status feed.
Here is a list of the lost animals that you can adopt in FarmVille, what kind of product they produce for your farm, and how much money they make.
Format:
Animal Name: Product in XX time for XX coins
Black Cat: Produces Yarn every 3 days (69 hours) for 86 coins.
Black Sheep: Produces Wool every 3 days (69 hours) for 56 coins.
Brown Cow: Produces Chocolate Milk once every day (23 hours) for 12 coins.
Elephant (limited time animal, no longer available, and only available through free gifting): Produces Circus Peanuts once every 4 days (92 hours) for 125 coins.
Pink Cow: Produces Strawberry Milk once every day (23 hours) for 18 coins.
Swan: Produces Swan Feathers every 2 days (46 hours) for 80 coins. These can not be adopted; they only come from ugly ducklings.
Turtle: Produces Eggs every 3 days (69 hours) for 86 coins.
Ugly Duckling: Can be Transformed into a Swan (permanent change) 3 days after it is placed on your farm.
Turkey: Produces feathers every 2 days (46 hours) for 80 coins.
Thoughts:
Some of the lost animals are simply vanity items. They really serve no other purpose other than to add style to your farm. However, two animals interest me. The most obvious one is the swan. The swan is currently the most profitable use of space in game (aside from the Acai tree which costs a lot of farm cash), as it produces 80 coins every 2 days and only takes up 1 small square of space on your farm.
The elephant is pretty bad profit wise, it produces the most total coins for any animal but it is so big it is not any good. It's more of a status symbol - "I have an elephant, I was here first!" sort of thing.
The pink cows are pretty good because you can put them in dairy farms. You can make your dairy farm three times as profitable by storing 20 pink cows in it!
